Every new day that Donald Trump remains president, peril to Americans increases. The recklessness of the man-child in the White House has put most of the rest of the world on edge, divided Americans into bitter camps and appears determined to push us dangerously close to the brink of war. He says he wants to work across the aisle. Perversely, he is on a path to accomplishing this but not in the way he might have imagined.

Viewers of “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” on MSNBC took notice two nights ago when a Republican former congressman from Florida suggested that our nation might be safer if Democrats win a majority of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. David Jolly put it this way: “I personally as a Republican in the past few weeks have wondered, is the republic safer if Democrats take over the House in 2018? I raised that issue with the leading Republican in D.C. last week, and the remarkable thing is he had been thinking the same thing.”

Former Rep. Jolly called Trump “unstable” and risky on matters of national security. “This is a president that needs a greater check on his power than Republicans in Congress have offered,” he said, touching on a crucial point. Republicans hold power in both houses but have twiddled their thumbs as their incompetent president has blustered us all closer to a dangerous war.

National security is at risk, Jolly insists. “We do know that we have a president who very well might put this nation at risk, and this Republican Congress has done nothing to check his power.” But, he added, Democrats could accomplish this, “and we might be better off if they take the House in 2018.”

O’Donnell almost couldn’t believe what he was hearing. To his credit, he offered Jolly the opportunity to modify his remarks. Instead, the former congressman reiterated his point in strong terms.

Jolly has been critical of Trump in the past, at one point calling the president “an ill-tempered, unqualified and at times dangerous leader of the free world.”

2018 mid-term elections loom. Democrats, prepare yourselves to win a crucial majority. Americans need to be protected from their own president. Did you ever imagine that we would reach this point?
