President Trump is pissed. Michael Cohen, Trump’s friend and personal attorney, is the keeper of the president’s secrets, both personal and business-related. Yesterday, FBI agents, armed with a search warrant issued by a Republican judge, seized privileged communications between the president and Cohen and documents related to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, the porn actress who claims a sexual affair with Trump.
This strikes a serious blow to our liar-in-chief. The Washington Post report includes this: “Tim O’Brien, author of the Trump biography ‘Trump Nation,’ said the seizure of records from his private attorney probably would ‘smell of a mortal threat’ by Trump. And, O’Brien added, ‘He is historically prone not to sit back and let the chips fall where they may. He is historically prone to come out with guns blazing.’”
Predictably, our president lashed out immediately, calling the raid disgraceful. “That is really now on a whole new level of unfairness,” he said. “It’s an attack on our country, in a true sense.” Really, Mr. President, an attack on our country?
The closer special counsel Robert Mueller, a Republican, gets to the truth, the more Trump squirms and heats up his rhetoric aimed at investigators. “This is the most biased group of people,” he has charged. Democrats all.” Well no, they’re not, but facts rarely get in the way of what comes out of our president’s mouth.
The raid was overseen by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan and was based in part on a referral from Mueller, said Cohen’s lawyer, Stephen Ryan, the Albuquerque Journal reports. To obtain a search warrant, agents must convince a judge they have probable cause of criminal activity and they believe they’ll find evidence of wrongdoing in a search. A warrant requires high-level approval within the Justice Department, and agency guidelines impose additional hurdles when the search target is an attorney. The key people in this particular situation are Republicans, not Democrats.
What will these seized documents reveal? We can only speculate, but surely they will lead us down the money trails. This is what most frightens Trump, who is desperate to keep his financial interests secret from the rest of us. Why? We are gaining on the answer.
